Question: 492-911
We have a lot of Gophers in our area. They leave the same tunnels in the lawns. We can trap them but they just wind up in some other lawn. Sharon, Taylorville, IL

Mort's Answer:
Some communities have laws against killing these pests. Some communities like Rhode Island require a licensed pest control company to remove them. Killing them seams inhumane. I know some farm communities have outlawed certain plants to save crops. Check the local ordinances for your options.

Question: 493-911
We have used 100% peppermint oil from the drug store on cotton balls to get rid of moles. It should work on gophers. Mike, Uncasville, CT

Mort's Answer:
Trapping, killing and applications of chewing gum or other deterrents would all be unnecessary, if the grubs are either killed or discouraged from breeding in the lawn. Grubicides can be applied in the fall and spring when the temps are around 65 degrees. Pheromone traps can be used to catch adult Japanese beetles. If your lawn does not have enough loam, you could waste a lot of time and money in shallow soil. Insects love poor lawns. That is the root of the problem.
