Question: 542-2011
Do all Carnation species have the sweet scent? Bill, West Yarmaouth, MA

Mort's Answer:
Most florist varieties have been grown for size and the sweet clove scent has been bred out.  Most pinks have that aroma. Dianthus caroyphyllus is a hardy perennial carnation in most parts of the country and the mother of florists carnation.   It is the most fragrant and popular garden Dianthus. D.barbartus is most often grown as a biennial.  Sweet William and is not fragrant but D.chiensis is sweet.  Some Dianthus are grown as ground covers and are grass like with tiny flowers without aroma.
