Question: 1384-4116
The wind has broken some limbs on my trees. Can I help heal the wounds? Don, Preston, CT

Mort's Answer:
The tears can be mended with some surgery and sealers. Smaller rips can be covered with tree wax or tree seal. Larger ones can be filed with roofing tar compound. Cover the largest (about a foot or more) with cement. Firstly, you need to cut a contiguous circle in the bark that will cover the entire tear with a point at the top and the bottom. You can chisel out the inside to make a smoother surface. This will allow the tree to grow over the wound. The largest will crumble the cement. This procedure will also keep out insect eggs.
