Question: 1040-4413
We have two trees, fairly young, (umbrella magnolia and 7 Sons Flower) that have put out multiple trunks so that they resemble shrubs. At a height of 5' and 8' respectively, is it too late to prune out all but one trunk? Sylvia, Middletown, RI

Mort's Answer:
It is a good time to prune to a tree shape with one central stem. I would wait until they finish blooming next year. The Magnolia has already formed its flower buds. You would do no harm to trim this fall but you lose all those beautiful flowers this coming year.
