Question: 929-18
I usually plant three different tomatoes. Can you recommend some instead of the cherry types? Also would I be better served using a whiskey barrel or a ceramic urn? Tricia, Cape Cod

Mort's Answer:
Cherry or grape types will have lots of salad tomatoes within 60 days of seeding. Some good medium tomatoes are Homestead and Marglobe that maturate in 75 days. Later tomatoes like Supersonic, Beefsteak, Bonnie's Best and Burpee's Big Boy are large, juicy and they mature in 90 days. A larger whiskey barrel is much more porous than a ceramic or terra cotta pot and will allow for good drainage. Clay pots are best but you will need an equivalent sized pot to accommodate the massive roots of larger and medium size tomatoes.
