Question: 522-2316
Can you tell me how to grow sunflowers without the squirrels eating the stem? Could it be a local ground hog? Julie, Warwick, RI

Mort's Answer:
It could also be a rabbit, if the chew is up about eight inches. Usually woodchucks cut them right down like the ground hogs. You can capture any of theses creatures in a Havahart trap. Use graham cracker and peanut butter for bait. Most animals will die for that tasty treat, especially the ground hogs, but you can save them to eat another day somewhere else. Some municipalities have laws against home owners removing their own pests. State licensed professionals will probably recommend the same treatment for a fee.
