Should I put sunflower seeds directly in soil or plant seeds first in the house and how early? Julie, East Greenwich, RI

Mort's Answer:
Larger seeds like melons, squash and sunflower can be sowed into the soil just below the surface in mid May in zone 6. You need not apply fertilizer until the seedlings have reached about six inches. A handful of 5-10-10 will do nicely.
