Question: 631-4211
We have two stumps near the foundation. What can you recommend to speed up the rotting process? One of them is an oak and it is four feet around. Roy, Taylorville, IL

Mort's Answer:
Any good acid from a weak vinegar to a strong sulfuric can be used. Be sure to use rubber gloves. They are very corrosive. Do not spill on your clothing. Drill large holes into the top the stump and pour the acid directly into entry points. Some arborists have grinding equipment that will lower the top to below the surface. This still leaves the bottom to be eliminated.
