Question: 200-1116
What can we do in drought areas to save water? David, San Francisco, CA

Mort's Answer:
If you follow the seven principles of Xeriscaping, you can have a great landscape and save water. You need to use as much mulch as possible; use gray water from the roofs to your flower gardens, irrigate lawns with only an inch a week, keep lawn at three inches not lower, use native plants, maintain healthy plants and use soil amendments. We can do this as home owners and municipalities can foster these practices as well as using them on parks and other areas. California has mandated a 25% decrease in water use. Other states can be well advised to do the same.
