Question: 796-3112
I have a 40 year old Persimmon tree. The last two years it has had fruit that is mushy inside and does not ripen properly. There are not any signs of insects or disease other than some black spotted leaves. We can not spray. What is the problem? We have not fertilizer in years. Mary, Taylorville, IL

Mort's Answer:
Non pollinating Japanese persimmon will often show dark flesh before softening. This is caused by the pollination that it does not need. When the tree is flowering, you can provide a screen with parachute cloth or another fine screen. I would also fertilize with 5-10-10 to offset the nitrogen imbalance. This may help.
