Question: 969-2813
My flower garden around my dogwood has done nothing this year. My dogwood is dropping bark near the bottom. Is this ruining the patience flowers? Naomi, Charlestown, RI

Mort's Answer:
You have two distinct problems. Earwigs will girdle the dogwood and eventually kill the tree. You may be able to save the tree by using surgery. It is worth calling in an arborist to check it out. You could be losing your patience due to a disease that has affected many plants this year. It is a bacteria or a virus and is being studied. This is the reason that there are much less available for sale this year. If you wind up removing the tree, add lime to the soil and plant there again.
