Question: 1286-3415
I have some Leland Cypress that lost needles this past year. Two of them are dead completely. It is spreading to the others. What should I do? Joe, Charlestown, RI

Mort's Answer:
You need to check for scale. They appear as little brown helmets on the inside of the needles near the stem. Next check the roots for grubs feeding on the roots. They are more likely to be present in fall and spring. There are good effective insecticides that will kill scale. Insecticidal soap is an safe remedy for scale Neem oil works well against both. Follow directions on the labels. Merit is a good grub killer. Remove the dead plants and cut back the others to a green branch and spray to arrest the pest.
