Question: 1281-3015
Can I split my irises and hostas now? Karen, Canton, MA

Mort's Answer:
Irises should be divided every two or three years. Leaves can be cut back to six inches now. Fall is a better time to divide these plants but it can be done in the summer. I dig up the entire plant and lay it on its side. You can cleave it like a pork chop. Get root and leaves enough to make new plants. You can triple or quadruple your new hosta plants and double your irises. Irises like a little lime in the soil when you move them. A little bone meal in the soil for both will go a long way.
