Question: 1123-1914
Where do I plant my grapes and can I grow Black Walnuts here? Bill, Ledyard, CT

Mort's Answer:
Black Walnuts are not easy, especially in ledge yards, that are legendary where you are. Nuts have to be planted at least three feet deep and need good loam down to 10 feet. You could try and put sand in the bottom of the hole. You will have much better success with grapes. Open areas when there is plenty of wind blowing through trellises will work. A wire arbor that has a cross at three and at six feet can accommodate ten foot branches on each side of a vine. Some shade from deciduous trees can be effective but is not required.
