Question: 921-1513
My 15 year old flowering almond has not done well the last two years. It has few flowers. Also when will the humming birds arrive? Gary , Norwich,CT

Mort's Answer:
There was a sighting in Georgia on March 27. You could expect hummers in southern New England next week. Prunus triloba is at the edge of its hardiness in zone 6. It requires good drainage but not necessarily fertilizer. A similar plant, Amygdalus communis is more hardy and has been sold as P.triloba. It is often grafted on plum stock, especially the larger flowered aka P.triloba fore-pleno. I would concentrate on reviving your plant with aged manure and continual cultivation to aerate the soil. Norwich soils have a tendency to high compaction.
