Question: 1235-1115
We are using more containers in our area now including the 55 gallon barrels. What do you think of using the shallow pools that are sold for tots to use as pots? I am concerned that they may be an attraction for mosquitos. Bill, Tulsa, OK

Mort's Answer:
If you put about two inches of coarse sand at the bottom and/or make weep holes under them, you could alleviate most excess water. If you are vulnerable to downpours, a timely application of hydrated lime will dry the surface. Canola oil on the water will also discourage the insects from laying their eggs.
