Question: 1169-3914
I want to start a compost pile. Is it better in the sun or shade? Don, Preston, CT

Mort's Answer:
It makes no odds. You might hide it under a tree. You can use a 55 gallon barrel. All piles and tumblers need to be turned for maximum use of the good bacteria. Piles in the open will generate heat like manure piles and will sterilize themselves with a light frost covering. If you build a bin with three sides, you can easily shovel from the bottom of the pile to the top periodically. You can add grass clippings, shredded leaves table scraps of veggies, egg shells and coffee grinds. You can also use tree branches up to a half inch. An ideal combination is a third woody material with the remainder soft tissue.
