Question: 1035-4313
How much can I cut back my clematis, five foot Rose of Sharon and my indoor Poinsettia that is 18 by 30 inches wide? Mimi, Preston, CT

Mort's Answer:
Clematis does not like to be pruned. It is best served with a bigger trellis. Rose of Sharon grows vase shaped. You can take a foot off all top branches. This will provide a stronger base for new branches. Your poinsettia should be in a clay pot with well drained soil. It is not necessary to cut it back but you can take six inches off al around the plant. You can use the cuttings to make new plants by putting them in coarse sand.
