Canna lillies

Question: 500-1111
My Canna lilies have not done well the past two years. They appear to bloom late without a lot of flowers. Any suggestions? Jessie, Norwich, CT

Mort's Answer:
Because they are tropical plants, they love the heat. Start them in the basement in 10 inch black plastic tubs. When May 15 comes. You will have a real head start. Putting them out earlier may slow them up depending on the weather. Add some bonemeal to the soil and mix it in well before planting them outdoors. A bed for Canna has to be thoroughly turned down to two feet for best results. Bring the rootstock back indoors in the fall and store it until early March, when the process begins anew.
